How to Back Up and Restore GB WhatsApp Chats
Always back up your chats before you reinstall GB WhatsApp, change phones or move to another version. A few minutes now can save years of conversations.
How to Create a Backup
- Open GB WhatsApp and go to Settings > Chats > Chat backup (names vary slightly by version).
- Tap Back up to save a local copy on your phone.
- Open your file manager and find the GB WhatsApp folder, usually under
Android/media, then copy it to another location such as cloud storage or a PC.
Local backups are the dependable option. Google Drive backup may not be available in modified apps, so do not rely on it.
How to Restore on the Same or a New Phone
- Install GB WhatsApp but do not finish setup yet.
- Copy your saved backup folder into the matching folder on the phone, keeping the database files intact.
- Open the app and verify the same phone number.
- When asked, tap Restore and wait for completion.
Moving Chats From the Official App
Back up the official WhatsApp first, copy its database and media folders, place them in the GB WhatsApp folder (renaming folders as needed for your version), then verify the same number. Folder names differ across builds, so keep your original copy untouched.
If the Restore Does Not Work
- Check that you used the same phone number.
- Confirm the backup file is in the expected folder and not corrupted.
- Make sure the app has storage permission.
- Do not mix backups from different developers, as signatures and formats can clash. More fixes are in our troubleshooting guide.

How often should I back up?
Weekly is sensible, and always before updating. See the update guide.
Are backups encrypted?
Do not assume so. Store them somewhere private.
